I feel like I have lived three lifetimes. My life before 1997, the year my husband and best friend died, from 1997 – 2004 and then 2004 – present and onwards.

I was married to the most wonderful man I could ever have imagined. We spent 17 years living life to the fullest and being deeply in love. He was the most creative artist I have ever known. Regularly, he would shower me with gifts of his creativity. I have been loved in a way that few ever are.
And so, when he was diagnosed with cancer in 1993, our lives became basically one driving force of helping him to get well. After 4 years, he finally knew that his body could no longer sustain the stress of it all and he died in Nov. of 1997.

After his death, I was completely exhausted and was then catapulted into a serious depression that lasted for over 8 years. During that time, I lost everything. My health deteriorated to my being 97 lbs, weak, filled with pain, while being in and out of suicidal thoughts. At that time I was a trained psychologist and was seeing a counselor weekly. Still I, nor her, knew how to help me. The shock of my husband’s death had launched me into instant menopause even though I was only in my early 40’s. My body was racked with pain, almost constantly.

I lost all my money and assets and eventually ended up in bankruptcy. For a while, I lost my own daughter, who could not bear to be around all the pain of first her father dying and then her mother in such pain.

Many of my friends also left me not knowing how to be of help.
If it were not for my son, who seemed to always keep the vision of his mother, whom he remembered as healthy, confident and empowering of others, I think I would have died as well. He often did not know what to do or say but his presence was enough to comfort me during the most difficult times. We were all attempting to come to grips with this enormous loss we all felt.
I did not know how to get myself out of this misery. I had been so happy and now, it seemed, I could not find any happy thoughts.

I would watch endless movies, because when I was watching movies, I was not thinking horrible thoughts of how I could die or how I could not help myself. I was and am so grateful for these movies; they were most helpful in managing my well-being.

I was taking anti-depressants and sleeping medication. While they helped to keep me out of the worst thoughts i.e. suicide ideation, I could no longer feel any happiness either. Anti-depressants make you feel like you are in a straight jacket, you do not feel as bad, nor can you feel happiness.
It was the most painful time of my life and I had absolutely no idea what to do to help myself, suicide seemed like the best solution. I thought when I died; I would not feel this bad anymore.
I managed to pack my family up and move back to a part of my country that I felt better in and then in a state of giving up, I began to find my path back to health.

Journey Work: First, I discovered a book called The Journey. This book talked about the science of how memories from the past, if they are negative, can stay activated in the body and can create illness and behaviors that sabotage one’s wellness. This author had discovered a way to release these old painful memories, thus restoring wellness to the person. I was a psychologist and so I already knew that negative past experiences had a huge impact on a person’s life. As soon as I finished the book, I called the only person trained in this work in my area, for a session with her.

In that one session, my depression of 6 years lifted, and in a few more sessions, that I was able to do on my own, I began to feel better and better. I knew that I had found a way to get at the emotional component of my distress.
